Kids photoshoot Dorset

My top tips for photographing reluctant children

Have you ever tried to photograph a child who does NOT want to be photographed? (I presume you are nodding your head right now.)

Yes, it can be very difficult, for sure!

Photographing reluctant children

I have literally photographed thousands of children over the years and, believe me, not all of those have wanted to have their photo taken.

Delaying and avoidance tactics? You name it, I’ve seen it!

You could say that photographing reluctant children is a day to day occurrence for me.

Over the years I’ve developed lots of coping strategies for handling even the most resistant children.

I often see parents getting stressed when their child doesn’t cooperate during a photoshoot. But there really is no point.

I always get the shot I am after eventually. If you heed my tips below you will too!

My three top tips

1. Be prepared to wait

While it can take time to get reluctant children to cooperate, you’ll usually be rewarded for your perseverance and persistence.

Don’t rush the child or make them feel under pressure to perform to the camera.

As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait!

2. Let them explore the environment

Whether I’m photographing on location or in my photography studio, the setting is usually new to the child.

So I let the child get comfortable in the surroundings first, before attempting to take their portrait.

I also often pull out props for younger children to climb on – chairs, a rocking horse, or a toy car for example.

Kids photoshoot Dorset

Toys such as teddies and softballs are also good to distract a reluctant child.

If outdoors, encourage them to find sticks or leaves, and run around for a while to burn off some energy before you attempt to take their portrait.

3. Make them laugh

If a young child is refusing to look at the camera or, worse, is crying or having a tantrum, I sing!

A quick rendition of ‘Row Row Row Your Boat’ or ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It’ usually induces a smile. Or at least a cursory glance.

And that’s despite my terrible singing voice!

Noisy toys – things that squeak, rattle or jingle – also work well to get them, at least, looking in the right direction.

Embrace the summer with an on location photoshoot

By Karen Wiltshire of KW Photography (www.kw-photography.co.uk)

I’m really enjoying getting out of the studio and discovering gorgeous locations for my on location photography! If you follow my page on Facebook you will have perhaps seen some of my recent work?

So, today I wanted to share some of my latest outdoor portraits not too far from my studio in Poole,  Dorset. I hope that these natural relaxed portraits may inspire you to consider an on location photoshoot of your own, and to get booked in while you can!

Summer has arrived!

Summer is now officially here (yes, really)!

So there is no time like the present to embrace the long, light evenings and get out and about for some child or family portraits.

On location photoshoot in Dorset

Here in Dorset we are totally spoilt with the great outdoors. There are so many beautiful local landscapes – a photographer’s dream!

Much to my daughter Lizzie’s annoyance, I love spending my evenings seeking out locations well off the beaten path.

I’m amazed after all these years that I still manage to find wonderful, relatively undiscovered places each and every year!

Stunning floral backdrops

Last month I shared some of my favourite images among the bluebells. Since then I have been loving the local poppy fields. They have been particularly amazing this year, although they are, sadly, just past their best now.

I’ve been loving the vibrant colours and have taken any chance I could to keep going back for more. Clients have loved them too!

The daisy fields are also so pretty right now. Here’s a couple of portraits from a shoot this week.

Both my clients and I have been really enjoying getting out among the great outdoors here in Dorset. If you’d like an on location photoshoot, contact me to book your session today!

Location Photography: Portraits among the beautiful bluebells

Once again, bluebell season has now come and gone. I’m really sad as i love bluebells for location photography.

Since the end of April I have had weeks of fun visiting my local bluebell woods, taking portraits of my clients and their families.

So today I wanted to share some of the portraits that I have taken recently, among the beautiful bluebells.

These include an extra special image of a gorgeous newborn sleeping peacefully among the bluebells – not something that you see every day!

Hopefully these give you inspiration for what’s possible in these lovely spring and summer months. If you fancy something similar do get in touch to find out more about my outdoor photography service.

Bluebells at Pamphill

2 boys in Bluebell woods

There is a wonderful bluebell copse in nearby Wimborne Minster, here in Dorset, and it’s a favourite haunt of mine in the springtime.

It’s one of the many stunning locations throughout Dorset and Hampshire that I use regularly when doing my outdoor lifestyle photography.

The blanket of colour created by the swathes of delicate bluebells is absolutely gorgeous. Every year I look forward to visiting.

There’s a window of around six weeks when the bluebells are in full bloom. Sadly the season has just finished for another year, but I’m delighted with the portraits I’ve taken and my clients have been too.

If you go down to the woods today…

This portrait of a gorgeous newborn baby sleeping among the bluebells wasn’t a private commission; more of a personal project.

location photography

When I have some free time, I like to try out new things and this year I thought it would be wonderful to develop my location photography portfolio by taking some outdoor photos of a newborn. This time, in the local bluebell woods.

So I went along to Pamphill with a good friend of mine, Samira. She’s also a newborn photographer.

It was a fairly warm day but we ensured that the baby was nice and cosy with the help of a heat pad hidden from view, and plenty of blankets. She slept the whole time, bless her, so was clearly oblivious to her starring role in this rather unusual photoshoot!

I took the image from low down, shooting through the leaves to create a misty effect at the front. Then, just a few tweaks in Photoshop were needed to sort out the wonky headband and some stray bluebells. And, voila!

We were delighted with how the images turned out, and they were even included in the Daily Echo!

Enduring appeal

Seems the bluebells never lose their appeal! They are gorgeous, dawn or dusk.

I, for one, can’t wait for next spring so I can take more lifestyle portraits out in the bluebell woods.

Where are your favourite places to view bluebells? Do let me know in the comments.

Getting Your Baby Snaps… AH-TISH-SHOO!

A-TISH-SHOO!! AHHHHHH-TISH-SHOO! No, don’t worry I haven’t got a cold and nor has the wonderful Karen from KW Photography, though with all the A-Tish-Shoos you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise. However, fake sneezes and giant raspberries are one of the many ways in which Karen manages to coax the most gorgeous smiles out of the little ones she photographs on a daily basis…

Baby girl sat laughing

When I was pregnant, I knew that at some point I would want to get some pregnancy pictures despite the fact that other than the odd selfie I HATE having pictures taken – I just do not think I am very photogenic at all. Anyway, I happened to mention to my family, that at some point I would love some pictures done and my wonderful sister and brother-in-law gifted me a maternity photo shoot for my eighth month of pregnancy and it is here that my story begins.

Pregnant mum to be

My sister sent me the link for KW Photography so I I could look at the style of photos done by a lady called Karen. I totally fell in love with them and the session was booked. You have no idea how close I came to not having these done…

I booked in at 8 months so I was nice and big and the session was wonderful. Karen was very calming and constantly checking I was okay and guided me very gently through the photo sessions. We did several different types of photos and I had some wonderful pictures to look through and choose from. One of the things I love about Karen is that she has so many different photo packages to suit everyone from digital to canvases and prints!

Remember I said that I was lucky to get these done? Well, I had these done on a Wednesday in July and on that very Sunday Alyssa arrived!! Talk about timing… turns out I had been in labour the whole week… hence feeling slightly uncomfortable for a while. I am so glad I managed to get these shots done though because I think they truly reflect how happy I was to be carrying my little girl in my tummy! Little did I know

That my photography relationship with Karen was only just beginning!

When I had been there for my maternity shoot, it was hard not to notice the wonderful photos of children all around the studio. Karen specialises in Newborn and Baby Photography and is known as something called “A Baby Whisperer!” Like the horse whisperer only with babies… just to make that clear. So, I didn’t think twice and we penciled in a time for Alyssa to do a newborn photoshoot which usually happens within the first two weeks post-birth. Of course, as it happens, Alyssa was five weeks old when she had hers done because we were in the hospital for a while after she was born. It didn’t matter though and the experience was amazing.

Alyssa and I arrived on our own and it was just lovely. Karen made me a cup of tea and Alyssa lay asleep in my arms. I handed Alyssa to Karen who stood rocking her for a while and then I sat and watched as slowly she placed Alyssa on a giant cushion that had been set up to take pictures of her on. It was amazing to see how, whilst

Alyssa was asleep, Karen was able  to move her into different positions and wrap her or dress her in different outfits. To be honest, it was so relaxing for a new mum who, like all new parents, felt like they’d been on a bit of a journey and back recently.

Alyssa stirred occasionally but with a stroke of the cheek from Karen she nestled back down – being slightly awkward at times by refusing to tuck her feet in. She only woke once in the entire session and had a little bit of milk to settle her back off again. Whilst she fed, Karen completely transformed the room and created a new set-up for Alyssa to be photographed in. For this, Alyssa was briefly awake and nosy as ever as she stared up at Karen wondering what was going on. After a few photos awake, she closed her eyes, snuggled down and went back to sleep, perfectly content. The whole session took about 3 hours because Alyssa woke up and it’s advised it can take anywhere from 2-4 depending on the baby. The time flew by and it felt like only five minutes. It was such a calm and relaxing space to be in and as I said an absolute joy to watch – Karen treats each baby as if they were her own.

the video

At the end of the photo session I gave Karen my details and also approval to share any of Alyssa’s photos on her business page and awaited eagerly for the photos. I didn’t have to wait long as within 24 hours, Karen had posted an edited picture as a sneak peak to the album. 10

days later (can be up to 14) I received an email with a link to an album so I could view and select the photos I wanted….OMG! I couldn’t choose, I wanted them all and actually ended up having them all! What was really nice was that Karen had included taking a picture of Alyssa and I together at the end and you can just see the joy in my face.

Once I had ordered and paid for the photos, only two days later this beautiful box with a wooden USB (I had ordered the digital package) beautifully wrapped arrived through the post with all of the photos on it. This was just the icing on the cake to the whole experience. It was then that I messaged Karen saying that actually I wanted to do the whole Baby’s First Year Package – Newborn, Sitting (around 7-8m) and First Birthday! I roughly booked it in, we stayed in touch and I went back to looking adoringly at the photos over and over again!

Baby Photography from a clients view

Fast forward 7 months and one sunny afternoon I found myself back on Karen’s doorstep with my beautiful bouncing baby in my arms. I should say that this was the second time in a month I found myself on her doorstep because the first time we tried to take some pictures, Alyssa was

ill and we had to give up after ten minutes. Karen was so understanding and we re-booked and here we were.

This time, I was much more involved and helped place Alyssa and make sure she didn’t fall over whilst Karen was in front with a camera doing everything she could to make Alyssa laugh and smile. To be honest, it didn’t take much. I think Karen had Alyssa at “Hello!” It was lovely being involved and being up close watching how Alyssa interacted in the situation. Now I know she likes attention and is a little bit camera happy but this was something else… she completely turned it on. She had raspberry competitions with Karen and laughed her head of when Karen began fake sneezing at her. Then she leaned in raising her eyebrows, showing her cheeky grin and waving away… lapping up the attention.

We took so many different shots and each came with a scene change that was so quick whilst we changed Alyssa into a different outfit – we took some of our own clothes but Karen has an overflowing wardrobe of outfits and accessories too! Once we were done we sat chatting as I dressed Alyssa and Alyssa has this thing… if she likes someone she dips her head to one side down onto a shoulder, looks at them and grins. It is very cute, cheeky and flirty and oh my goodness she must have given Karen about 10 head dip and smiles (think of it as the bend and snap for babies!!) In such a short amount of time, Karen created a lovely bond with her.

In next to no time, an email appeared once again giving me access to view the amazing shots Karen had once again taken. It is so difficult to choose though. Once again, I chose a digital package and received my little wooden box with the photos in again. Once I have loaded these onto my computer, I put each little box into Alyssa’s memory box as something for her to look at when she is older.

Now, we have a few months break until Alyssa’s first birthday when we join Karen to celebrate it with a Cake Smash (you must have seen her Cake Smash video… it went viral!! If not click here to see it!) and we can’t wait!

Thank you so much Karen for helping me to watch my little girl grow up and create and preserve such special moments. Thank you also for creating that unique bond with the babies big and small that come through your door. You make becoming a parent even more special than it already is. We look forward to seeing you soon!

newborn photography workshop

Newborn photography workshop with the amazing Kelly Brown

Newborn photography workshop with the amazing Kelly Brown

I’ve had my photography business for five years now. I’m a professional photography trainer and mentor, a Craftsman in child portraiture and I have previously won the photographer of the year award with The Guild of Photographers. Yet if you’re a client of mine you’ll probably already know that I’m not one to rest on my laurels. i love training and love attending newborn photography workshop.

I’ve never sat back and thought that I knew all there is to know about newborn photography. I just love learning new photography techniques and tricks to make my photographs even better.

I visit my mentor Damian McGillicuddy up in Chester every six weeks and have been doing so for 3 years now. It’s long old drive up there (the longest journey took me 9 hours once!) so the fact that I’ve stuck with it shows I’m very dedicated to my professional development!

Ultimately all this mentoring and training helps me run a better photography studio for you, my lovely clients.

Last year I bagged myself a seat on a newborn photography workshop with the amazing Kelly Brown from Australia.

The workshop, unbelievably, sold out in 7 minutes! That’s 60 places gone in just 7 minutes! That shows what a huge figure she is in this industry.

So the excitement has built over the months leading up to the workshop and then, last week, I finally got to have my training weekend with her. Now, Kelly has been on my bucket list to train with since I started newborn photography four years ago.

She has been an absolute inspiration and I admit she’s been a photography crush of mine since I first watched her on creative live doing a talk on newborn photography. I have admired her amazing award-winning images from afar and so naturally jumped at this exclusive chance to meet her in person and benefit from her expertise while she was briefly in the UK.

So I packed my bags and headed to London to Russ Jacksons studio for the weekend. Wow! What a weekend it was.

Kelly flew in from Australia the day before our workshop and managed to create some fab shots despite her jetlag!

We had three gorgeous newborn girls as models for the day and Kelly made posing them look like a breeze.

While much of what was covered mirrored what I already do, I definitely picked up a few tips from the weekend which I plan to incorporate into my own sessions. I also met lots of lovely people on the workshop and Kelly even took us all out for dinner afterwards. It was a real hoot!

Because I just love to evolve and grow as a photographer I will keep attending my mentoring sessions and training workshops. Hopefully you’ll see my photography evolving as a result.

Here’s a few photos from the workshop. They were posed by Kelly Brownphotographed by me.

Don’t forget to keep up to date with all my latest news, tips and occasional special offers by signing up to my newsletter.

Bye for now

Viral Cake Smash

Viral Cake Smash!

March 2016 – My Cake Smash video goes viral!

As I write this I’m in complete shock.

I recently had a professional video created to show my customers what happens behind the scenes at one of my Cake Smash sessions. You may well have seen it if you follow me on Facebook?

Well, after I posted the video to Facebook last Thursday, it has gone viral!

Unbelievably, as of today, the video has reached over 7.5 million people and over 2.5 million people have watched it. And that figure keeps on growing!

So, why all the attention? Why now?

I’ve been photographing Cake Smashes for years. I’ll admit, it’s certainly not a new concept.

So I hadn’t expected my video to go viral and to have it shared over 50,000 times!

What a week!!!!

The power of Facebook

From what I know of how Facebook works, video content uploaded directly into Facebook does enjoy great reach when compared with standard text or image posts.

So, I can only presume that the video enjoyed great feedback initially, from the people who follow my page. Then Facebook decided to increase the reach and show the video to many others off the back of this initial positive reaction.

That effect has now been intensified. Reach hit 1 million by Tuesday, 2 million by Wednesday, and as I write this on Thursday tea time, total reach has exceeded 7 million!

By the time you are reading this, perhaps it’s reached even more?

As a result of these millions of views, I’ve been inundated with over five thousand lovely comments from people all around the world who’ve enjoyed it.

Bookings for cake smashes are also up!

Cake Smashing Fun

If you’re familiar with what a Cake Smash is, you’ll know that I love them as they are a great way of celebrating a baby’s first birthday. (If you’re not, read more about what happens at a cake smash photoshoot here).

The photos are a great memento of baby hitting that all-important first birthday milestone.

Parents love them too, as I get adorable, cheeky photos – the kind of photos that parents can’t take themselves at home.

I photograph all the crazy, messy fun!

A big thank you

So, huge thanks to all of you who have liked, commented or shared on the video already. You have helped my cake smash video to reach an unbelievable number of people.

And if you haven’t already, please take a look at my video to see what all the fuss is about.

Let’s aim to get 3 million views by the weekend!

mummies to be

Something new for you mummies to be!

Mummies to be

You know me…Never one to stand still! As a complement to my pregnancy and baby portrait services, I’ve decided to introduce something brand new for you mummies to be. Something which I hope many of you will love.

I’ve been busy behind the scenes testing out a new idea,  a plaster cast of a pregnant lady’s baby bump.

This makes a beautiful prop, in the shape of a bowl, which can then be incorporated into a newborn baby photoshoot several weeks later.

During your newborn photo shoot, the baby can be placed in the bowl – in my signature sleeping baby style – and then the bowl is yours to take home with you afterward, as a lasting memento of your pregnant shape.

What a lovely way to celebrate your pregnancy and to create a personalised photo prop for your baby’s first photoshoot!

I’m really excited about adding another string to my bow with maternity bump castings. I love learning new skills and trying out new things, and the feedback from ladies I’ve done a cast for is extremely positive.

The process is incredibly quick to do and is completely safe for you pregnant ladies. So, don’t worry about having to stand for long periods of time while you have your cast done, and the process isn’t uncomfortable for you either. I promise!

mummies to be

I hope that you love this idea?

If you’re expecting in the next sixth months, I’d love to get you booked in for your maternity bump casting soon! The ideal time to get one done is between 34-38 weeks of pregnancy. Please contact me to secure your session.

Also, please share news of my new service with all the pregnant ladies who you think would love to get one done. Thank you in advance!

Finally, if you’d like to know more please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you have.

I will be posting more examples of my maternity bump castings on my social media pages along with reviews from ladies who have tried it out for themselves.

Until next time, thanks for reading.

KW Photography: The Video!

I’m so excited about my new promotional video that I had to share it with you!

Those of you who follow my Facebook page will know that I’ve been working very hard behind the scenes in the past few months revamping my photography studio.

It’s had more than just a lick of paint, let me assure you! I’ve bought and decorated new furniture and given it all a fresh shabby chic feel, had a HUGE reorganisation of all my lovely photo props, updated my artwork displays and given my awards and certificates a place to shine, and de-cluttered on a massive scale! I’ve basically reorganised the whole setup.

Outside, the studio front door has had a fresh lick of paint, I had a brand new driveway done and have made the entrance more attractive with decorative plants and improved signage.

When the work was complete – exhausted but as proud as punch with the results – I then arranged to have a professional video produced. Scary but exciting!

The camera team filmed me working on two newborn photoshoots, capturing the clients arriving and right through the entire process; showing what happens at a typical newborn session.

I would love to know what you think? Please do comment to let me know.

Cake Smash Photography

Cake Smash photography Dorset

Smashin’ cakes and bath time bubbles

A Cake Smash photoshoot is a brilliant way to record the all-important milestone of your baby turning one. It’s a messy, fun, and unique way of celebrating. Kids and parents love it!

I’ve been very busy lately because of a flurry of cake smash bookings being the go-to Cake smash photographer Dorset. Many of the babies who came to me as newborns last autumn are now turning one, and it’s been a real pleasure to have them back in the studio again for some messy play!

I’ve recently invested in some gorgeous new props for my cake smashes too. My pride of joy at the moment is my new roll top bath. Check it out! Uber-stylish and the perfect size for a one year old covered in cake! I love it!

Wondering what’s involved in a Cake Smash?

A Cake Smash photoshoot lasts approximately one hour. After some initial photos and allowing time for your baby to become comfortable in the surroundings of my studio, the messy part of the photoshoot begins.

Fully themed to your unique requirements, the shoot involves getting baby dressed into a cute outfit (bring your own or I have lots of options for you to choose from on the day) and then I let them loose on their gorgeous giant cupcake. They are encouraged to dig in and get as messy as possible!

Cake smash setups

They are set against a coloured backdrop, complete with balloons, bunting and accessories. My cowboy and pirate themes are a huge hit with the boys. Girls just love the princess set up and my cute Kath Kidson colours and fabrics.

The final part of the cake smash photography Dorset shoot is where the baby is popped into the bath for bubbles and more fun and photos. A Cake Smash shoot is undoubtedly a sensory treat for babies, and clients often tell me that they sleep extremely well afterward (always a bonus!).

Capturing the key milestones in your baby’s early years with photography, like this, is a brilliant way of recording these wonderful happy moments. And because you come to my studio in Poole, there’s also the added bonus that there’s no mess for you to clean up afterward!

Find out more about my Cake Smash session here.

You can also view my Cake Smash gallery for examples of how messy it can get! Enjoy!

newborn baby

Radio Ga Ga , adventures of a Newborn Baby Photographer

Those of you who’ve met me will know that I’m not someone who craves the limelight, but when I’ve something important to say I’m happy to make my views known. And, yesterday I got to share the important message about safe practice in newborn baby photography when I was interviewed live on BBC Radio Solent and on BBC Radio West Dorset.

It’s something I’ve been talking about a lot on here recently as I believe the safety of the baby MUST come first, and that newborns shouldn’t be put in danger for the sake of a photograph. All safety-trained professional photographers know this of course, but parents using newborn photographers don’t necessarily realise how complex poses are created. So, I wanted to do my bit to increase awareness.

I arrived at the Bournemouth International Centre early yesterday morning and was chaperoned to the unmanned studio based there, shortly afterwards to be linked to Julian Clegg and his team who were broadcasting live from Southampton. Eek! At this point the nerves really set in!

Julian was great though and, after a friendly introduction, gave me five minutes of airtime to discuss how newborn photography can be practiced safely and to explain how posed shots, like the ‘head in hands’ shot is created using digital imagery techniques. The subject sparked a bit of controversy as not everyone is a fan of newborn photography of course but, as I stressed in the interview, I prefer the more natural baby poses myself although am trained and able to safely create the composite images such as the head in hands if a parent requests it.

newborn baby safety

I had a second interview on BBC Radio West Dorset as well, and have also recently been featured in the Bournemouth Daily Echo.

newborn baby

I hope that my small part in spreading awareness about this important issue helps to keep more babies safe during their newborn photoshoots.

Until next time,

Karen x
